I ate chocolate cake. Twice.
And do I regret it? Absolutely not.
The first time I ate cake was while my two boys helped me make my husband’s 40th birthday cake. They squealed with excitement in the kitchen as they licked spoonfuls of whipped, buttery, chocolate icing. So I did what any self-respecting, life-loving mother would do – I grabbed a spoon, filled it with icing, licked it clean and squealed with excitement too.
The second time was when we sang happy birthday to my husband and cut a piece of the most decadent birthday cake I’ve ever made…
Like I said. Decadent. And you can’t even see the layer of strawberry jam and all the chocolate icing that’s holding this cake together. Nothing Paleo or sugar free about it!
My husband’s 40th birthday was one of the most beautiful days we’ve ever had and I decided from the beginning that I was going to embrace the entire celebration – including the cake! – and I’m so glad that I did. Life is for living.
So how did I feel afterwards? Well that was a lot of sugar and wheat hitting my stomach and it’s safe to say that I haven’t felt the best these last couple of days. I’m getting back on track now but feel tired and think it will take a good week of detox before I’m feeling 100% again.
Biggest challenges this week?
I remember reading on Sarah Wilson’s blog once that when she had her first taste of sugar after quitting she felt the pull back to all things sweet and had to fight back, and I would have to agree. It’s like that hit of chocolate cake told my brain that the flood gates had opened and we were back to full-on sugar mode. I’ve really had to fight the temptation these last couple of days.
Food journal & new recipes
Second biggest challenge this week? The food journal. Oh how I hate this thing! So much so that I’m going to give it the flick. Having to track my food really does my head in. You would have thought that 4 weeks in I’d be used to it by now, but it always seems to be the last thing on my mind. I might come back to it, but I doubt it.
My favourite recipe this week was without a doubt my low carb tuna bake. It was so good that I even enjoyed it for breakfast the next day. Yum! Highly recommended.
